Building A Collection

evileyepottery2024

Creating a pottery collection is a labor of love that requires dedication, patience, and precision. Over the past several months, I've been deeply involved in this process, transforming raw clay into unique pieces of art.

The Process

It starts with throwing pots on the wheel. Each piece begins as a simple lump of clay, shaped and molded into a desired form. Trimming follows, where excess clay is carefully removed, refining the shape to achieve a clean, well-defined form.

After trimming, the pieces undergo bisque firing in my mini kiln. This initial firing hardens the clay, making it durable yet still porous enough to absorb glaze. The glazing process is meticulous; each piece is coated with a glaze that will transform into vibrant colors during the final firing.

Glaze firing is the final step, where the pieces are exposed to high temperatures to achieve their finished look. This process requires patience, as the results are unpredictable and can vary greatly.

The Challenges

Pottery demands a high level of precision. Sanding down rough edges and ensuring that each piece has a stable base is crucial. I've had numerous mugs that ended up wobbling, making them unsuitable for sale. These imperfections are part of the learning process, helping me refine my skills and strive for better results with each piece.

The Joy of Creation

Despite the challenges, there's an immense joy in this craft. I wake up every day excited to head to my studio, eager to see how my collection is progressing. Today, I'm particularly excited as I'm taking some pieces to be fired in a larger kiln. This step will allow me to create even more diverse and intricate pieces. Building a pottery collection is a continuous journey of learning and improvement. Each piece tells a story of the effort and creativity that went into its creation. Stay tuned for more updates on my pottery adventures and the evolving Evil Eye Pottery collection!
